What are Orthotics?

Orthotics are special shoe or heel inserts a specialist prescribes, that are custom-made specifically to you.  Your practitioner may prescribe orthotics to treat foot, leg, or back problems.

They are customizable shoe insoles, available in many forms such as in-shoe orthotics, flip-flops or sandals. You can choose from a variety of colours, materials or opt-in for a conscious and sustainable alternative, as 3D printed orthotics.

The average person will take on average between 6,00 to 10,000 steps per day, putting thousands of pounds of pressure on his or her feet every hour. When an imbalance causes the proper movement pattern of the foot to be disrupted, a number of conditions can result, including damaging your foot for an extensive period of time.

Be conscious when buying footwear.

Wearing the wrong type of footwear can be dangerous and often times is the main cause of knee pain, hip misalignment, and back pain.

Most shoes offer little or no support to your vital joints, and whenever you experience foot pain, specifically in the arch of the foot, custom-made orthotics are able to secure a safe movement of your lower legs while providing cushion and comfort.

How Custom Orthotics Help?

orthotics consultation for heel pain at urban body physiotherapy clinic in solihull

A custom-made orthotic is a prescribed medical device by your physiotherapist, in addition to a rehabilitation treatment plan.

We use a 3D scanner to measure your feet for an accurate impression of lower legs, so the orthotic is true to your size and aids your needs. They are designed to control your alignment and facilitate the function of your foot.

Orthotics are used to treat and prevent abnormal motion, rolling of the foot, or any other misalignment of your body structure. The custom-made insoles redistribute the pressure on the bottom of your feet, decrease the pain and discomfort and improve your foot health considerably.

Custom-Orthotics are proven to:

  • Correct imbalance in the unique movement patterns of your feet.
  • Reduce pain the feet and other arras of stress and strain in the body.

If your feet are in the wrong position, then so are your ankle, knee, hip and lower back, which affects your neck and shoulder position as well.

We take care of the very foundation of your health, ensuring you move better and optimize your quality of life.

Plantar fasciitis foot image with red inflamation

Plantar Fasciitis

Do you suffer from intense heel or arch pain? It could be Plantar Fasciitis. Plantar fasciitis is a very painful injury and the most common cause of heel pain. This is an inflammation of the tissue that connects the heel bone to the toes

Hammer Toes

If your toes appear crooked or bent downward you may be suffering from hammer toes, mallet toes, or claw toes. These 3 very similar toe deformities result in the shortening of the toe tendons, thereby limiting toe motion.

Overpronation

The foot’s arch naturally collapses, absorbing impact and moulding to the terrain underfoot. When the foot collapses excessively and rolls inward, overpronation result, creating excess stress on tendons and ligaments that leads to pain.

Who are orthotics for?

There is no “right” answer for who can benefit from orthotics and supportive footwear.

From amateur to professional athletes, working parents, and those with foot injuries, orthotics have the ability to improve everyone’s quality of life.

How effective are orthotics?

The time it takes for your orthotics to begin working will depend on the type you purchase as well as the unique anatomy of your foot.

With  custom-made orthotics from Urban Body, many people have an immediate reduction in heel pain from the moment they begin using them. However, others may feel a gradual decrease in pain, taking as long as a month.

Orthotics can be a part of a comprehensive treatment plan to help those who have foot and ankle concerns.

What type of orthotics are right for you?

Orthotics can be customized in a variety of materials. Our physiotherapists will write a prescription for an orthotic material based on what condition and symptoms a patient has.

The orthotic types can range in materials from rigid — usually made from materials such as carbon fibre or plastic — to accommodative, which is very flexible and cushioning.

Some orthotics are full-shoe inserts similar to the insoles present in many athletic shoes. Others are a smaller heel insert that fits into the back cup of the shoe.

Our Physiotherapists may recommend using orthotics in conjunction with other rehabilitation treatment plans.

Do orthotics really help?

Orthotics don’t universally help all people with conditions that affect the foot and ankle. There are many complex considerations surrounding the effectiveness of orthotics, including:

  • the training and experience of the person making the orthotic
  • the physiotherapist’s prescription
  • the shoe in which a person wears them
  • how often a person wears them

There are studies that support the use of orthotics for treating foot and ankle problems. However, many of them stress that the orthotic must be well-fitting and worn correctly.

Aren't orthotics only for athletes?

It’s a common misconception that orthotics are only for athletes. At Urban Body, we know you don’t have to play a sport to deal with common foot pain. Let us help you figure out the perfect fit for your daily routine.

We have one focus, your feet and how to help you improve your foot health.
